Trauma & Stress Q & A

When do I need trauma and stress treatment?

You or a family member may need treatment for a trauma or stress-related disorder if you’ve experienced a stressful event or traumatic situation.

Trauma and stress symptoms may include:

  • Fear
  • Sadness
  • Shame or guilt around the event
  • Emotional numbness
  • Mood swings
  • Timidness
  • Avoidance
  • Eating disorders
  • Compulsions
  • Sleep issues
  • Substance abuse
  • Chronic physical pain
  • Hallucinations
  • Flashbacks
  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Self-harm

Your child may also exhibit social withdrawal or anxiety and trouble engaging in school.

What are trauma and stress disorders?

After a thorough psychiatric evaluation, your provider may diagnose you or a family member with a trauma or stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

With PTSD, you may experience persistent, frightening thoughts and memories or flashbacks to the traumatic experience. Other symptoms include depression, jumpiness, sleeping issues, or avoidance of triggering places or situations.

Acute stress disorder (ASD)

ASD symptoms are similar to PTSD but occur within the first month after a singular traumatic event.

Immediate treatment can help reduce the risk of ASD developing into PTSD.

Adjustment disorders

Adjustment disorders are unhealthy or disproportionate reactions to stressful changes or events in your life, like a divorce, death in the family, or sudden illness.

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD)

RAD is a rare condition where neglected children show a lack of engagement with positive or negative emotional triggers. They may have trouble forming healthy bonds with caregivers.

Disinhibited social engagement disorder (DSED)

Children with inadequate care may have DSED, causing them to be unusually open to interactions with strangers or over-eager to form attachments with others.

What are trauma and stress treatment options?

Your AG Psychiatry provider may recommend a combination of treatments.

Psychotherapy

Virtual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) help you understand your trauma and develop healthy thought and behavior patterns.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) uses eye movements to help you safely process traumatic memories. Prolonged exposure therapy (PET) allows you to face your traumas and improves how you respond to them.

For children, family therapy can restore healthy bonds with caregivers and improve relationship skills.

Support groups and meditation are also helpful tools.

Medications

Antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) help alleviate symptoms like depression.

Anti-anxiety medications improve anxiety and regulate mood.
